It may be a reverse NATing issue. Try accessing the site with the internal IP. If this works try setting up a internal DNS or maintain a global hosts file that your workstations can use..
I guess this anwsers the question but you should never plug any equipment directly into a wall outlet without some protection (surge/spike)..
