Scan network to see if SMS is running?
Going back to your original question, a slightly different way to see if SMS clients are installed is to see if they are running Remote Control. Since Remote Control listens on a TCP port you could use a port scanning tools to do this. FYI. SMS uses either port 2701 (SP2 and later) or 1761...- TomWatson2
