What OS are you running? In Win XP you could try to do a System Restore to a time when the App was functioning properly. I have had errors similar to that in the past and I have ended up (un-installing then re-installing)I am not sure if that is the best "fix" but it has worked for me.

How thick is your outline currently? It needs to be atleast 1 point sometimes it needs to be thicker. Try using a 2 point thick outline. The object definitely has to be selected before you go to Convert Outline to Object Let me know if that works.
