Our server dials using the modem connectied via the serial
to the customers modem.
The customer modem is plugged in via serial and the server is running a getty on that port.

I would recommend you check your path
maybe try the command "wich ls", that would tell you if ls in on your path.
if it's not you can try to locate it on the usual places and if it's not there, try with "find / -name ls" (this could take quite a while and slow the system...
Guys, Recently I revived and old E20 box we werent used.
My idea is to install AIX 5 on it.
It's got no video board so all i could do was plug a serial cable to my laptop.
When i turn on the server, instead showing the "intro screen" and give me the option to alter the boot sequence...
