    Athlon 1.2 Ghz instability

That's not necessarily a heat issue. It could be, but may be not. I worked on a system that did something similar (lock-up times were random during 3D games). Turns out it was a faulty power supply. If you have an extra handy, swap out PS's. Jason

    flashing the bios?

Also, you may not be able to back up your BIOS upon it being flashed. Be very careful when you're doing it this way... or you could get burned!. The other way that I've seen a BIOS flashed is through the use of a Windows app that has a way of backing up your old one (with a method of restoring...

    Memory Basics...

Ah CC21, but unlike gasoline, dakota81 has stated something very important: "... grab a stick of DDR400, even if your fsb may be 333MHz...the benefit being your next upgrade you will not have to replace the ram again." I would love to see regular as clean and as well as premium...

Imaging Small Old Disk to Large New Disk

It's possible to image your samller drive onto a larger drive IF there are no other changes to the configuration of your computer (ie new mobo, proc, etc). Also, keep in mind that your image will only be as good as the original... any faults you have now will be on the image and will be on the...

    Memory Basics...

The real kicker is this: match your ram's bus with that of your board's and your cpu... if your cpu's fsb is only 333, your board's 400, go with the PC 2700 because you're only going to bottleneck at the proc if you get the 3200 ram.

    Athlon XP and heat

edemiere, have you ever thought about modding your case with a blowhole? (that's a giant sucker of a fan mounted so it blows the air out the top of the case). Heat rises and will dissipate with cool, free moving air and a place to vent to (see diagram). ^ |...

    Motherboard Advice?!?

Actually, I think that it may not be too bad a board to pick up. It offers quite a bit and it would appear that you would have a lot of options for upgrading in the future. That's just my take on it. Jason

    Motherboard Backwards Compatibility

It all depends on the the type of board, processor and ram. A newer mobo will probably take PC2100 (266) DDR ram but it won't take Pc-133. It could take a range of processors (Duron/Athlon/Athlon XP but not a K6). It depends as well on front-side bus (FSB) too. You can't use a 100 fsb cpu in a...

    Motherboard Backwards Compatibility

It really depends on what you mean by backwards compatible... can you describe a bit more? Jason

    Motherboard Advice?!?

I agree with dakota81 that you should go with a slower clock speed in a processor to ensure you don't overheat your system. I've had some pretty bad experience with working on micro-atx mobos but as stated above; if you're using it just for work, integrated video is nice and easy to work with...

    Motherboard Problems

Sorry to hear about your problem, but it sounds like you friend the poor girl... Don't worry too much about it; you're not the only one (I've done it myself). You can probably cash in on the warranty and get a new or at least talk to the guy who sold it to you and see if you can get an exchange...

    Motherboard Advice?!?

I have to agree with Nate1749. Asus is a good brand and MSI isn't bad. I've heard Soyo was pretty decent, but I've never had one. I guess it also depends on your proc too. If you have an AMD, Asus or MSI is your best bet; For Intel, Asus and Intel are your best bet. Intel chips can get cranky...

Computer has mind of it's own; restarting + freezing + turning off

Nate1749, I really don't recommend a particular brand... they are basically a dime a dozen. So long as you get a couple that work. I've got some Speeze in my computer. They're already encased in heat-shrink tubing and are really quiet.

    Creating a router?

Thanks for the info Marc. Just trying to see what's possible. Jason

Computer has mind of it's own; restarting + freezing + turning off

I'm thinking that besides reseating the heat sink, buy a couple of 80 mm fans... that'll help in the long run anyhow.

    Creating a router?

I've got 2 100 mbps feeds (1 dedicated for ghosting), anywhere between 2 and 5 computers yes all are capable of running 100 mbps. As for the switch, where's the fun in that? That's another part of it too. We want to recycle some old parts and reduce the amount of clutter in here to gain...

    Creating a router?

Thanks for the input. What we're trying to go for isn't internet sharing but a way of expanding the number of 100 meg connections we have in our office (we currently have two). We'd like one to come off the LAN and link with the router (the onboard) and distribute (the PCI cards) to the rest of...

NICs fine but computer still doesn't find the network

What I meant was in W2K, when you add it, did you put your domain name and then your username when it asks you to sign on (domain\username)? I have to do this at work for some but not on all...

    Need advice

Unfortunately, I cannot agree with YokyDoky's idea of buying a second-hand computer... it's not going to cut it. That's a guarantee that I would stick to. AMD's new Barton chip should do the trick. The A7N8X should do the trick. That'll handle the hardware needed with little or no problem.

Am writing CL menus but I want to c

The thing is, when creating any 5250 screen, you are very limited to your colour options. There are only six colours your can use because that's all the emulator will support (even though your monitor can support millions more). BLU - blue GRN - green YLW - yellow WHT - white CYN - cyan (yes it...
