My friend is a Linux guru (He probably has 20 distro's) but is having problems installing his new webcam. (This shocks me [surprise] )
He is running Suse 9.0 and just bought a Logitech Quickcam Express. He's searched numerous sites (to include Suse & Logitech) but is still having a hard time...
Hmmmmmm.....since I have 2 spare pc's.....[ponder]
Maybe I'll put Suse on one and Debian on the other....[wink]

ROFLMAO......I love this thread! I'm glad to see people so passionate about their Linux Distro!
As always, I come here to get expert opinions on all things IT. I'm a Linux Newbie myself and now that I have 2 spare machines to play with....hehehe I'm gonna tick off Bill and install Linux...
I have a PGP user that is on a really old NT worksation that needs to be phased out. I want to replace the workstation with a newer W2k machine. I don't want to have to generate new keys for this user and go thru the pain/discomfort of exchanging keys.
Here are my questions:
1) What's the...
She is looking for another job but has determined that only having an A+ (and having only 3yrs of experience w/small company of less than 50 people) just makes real IT people laugh.
She hasn't taken the training because the only reputable place that offers it is owned/operated by the sys admins...

Hey - Why not tell your 1 & only tech that if she wants additional training that not only will she have to pay for it, she'll have to take vacation time to do it - but - only if that vacation time doesn't interfere with anything else. Then tell her that since the company doesn't require the...
I asked computer repair shops, ISP's, local computer vendors & tech spt companies and so far every one of them said they were not aware of any IT groups locally. The only thing I could find were user groups for ISP's and if you don't have them as your ISP provider you aren't supposed to attend...
Unfortunately I know very few IT people....I know 2 other than myself.

I've only been in the IT field for about 3yrs & I'm the helpdesk for a small company (less than 50 people). The helpdesk position didn't exist prior to me so my job duties have been created "on the fly" so to speak.
A+ is the only certification that I currently hold. (I have a...
Here's a new twist.....The new machines that we haven't been approved to purchase yet probably won't be replaced for 5-10 years.
I guess this means that I'm gonna have to fight for the most current hardware.

The company I work for is considering upgrading everyone to XP, there are about 50 users & currently we have zero XP machines.
I have inventoried our hardware and most of the pc's are about 10 yrs old so we will be replacing them during the upgrade process.
I have inventoried the applications...

I received materials from them and since I don't remember requesting it....I wanted to check with the experts here at Tek-tips to see if anyone has had good and/or bad experiences with them as they...
Occasionally we get an error on the network server and the thing beeps once every minute. (Of course, it never happens when the sys admin is in the office.)

She has the "Job duties" listing which outlines all of the things I'm responsible for. Shouldn't the previous sys admin have conveyed some of this information? After all, they are best of friends and her desk has been 20 ft away for the last 3 yrs.
The comp time policy for IT was...
I work for a small company with @40 employees. There are 2 people in the IT dept. The system administrator and myself (I’m the helpdesk). Recently the sys admin stopped being a full-time employee of this company and became a consultant that is in the office 2 days per week but dials in from...
I upgraded the Novell client from 4.83sp2 to the 4.9 client on a Windows 2000 pro machine.
With the 4.83 client I could add the person as a user in Windows and when they logged on thru the Novell Client for the first time the grey box would pop up and ask them for their Windows password and...
Small company: 2 people in IT dept: Sys Admin & tech
1) Refuse server & network training (or any additional training) for the A+ certified tech 'cause "you don't really need it being the help-desk person and all..."
1a) State that tech will never receive training that the sys admin...
Clarification on my part:
My sys admin is only in the office 2 days a week.
When there are problems I email or call (depending on the severity of the issue of course...) and receive my instruction(s) on how to handle whatever it is that is going on at the time.
I would prefer to locate...
