shrinking the database file?
Go to Tools, Database Utilities, and use Compact and Repair Database- garyd1

opening a .dat file
Try double clicking the file name in Windows explorer and see if it opens up in Notepad or Wordpad. You might also try renaming the file and change its .dat to .doc and see what application opens when you click on it.- garyd1
