Bluehorizon, In the meantime, I've found the solution. Appearantly, the TOC only retains the build-in heading styles and outline-level format styles. Setting an outline level format (paragraph) on my new styles automatically made the new styles available in the TOC. Anyway, thanks for your reply

Hi, How do you retain newly defined styles in Table of Contents option (Insert, Reference, Index & tables, Options and mark styles to be selected), as are the default Heading 1,2 and 3. I can select the new styles, use them to update my TOC, but I lose them again when I am restarting Word 2003.
