    It turns out that setting the dialogue boxes (within quark's export to pdf ) to NOT override distiller's settings is what solved the problem. Thanks for your input.

    Pdf files created using quark 5.(?) create a pdf file that contains some text as 100%K and some text within even the same word coming out as about 90%K. All text is set to 100%K. Anyone have any ideas? It makes no sense to me.
