Wireless accessing internet through desktop PC

Paul, That's the problem - the modem cannot connect to the router using an RJ45. It uses USB to connect to the desktop PC. Therefore, I need to use the router to connect to the PC with the USB modem, and then share that internet connection with the other PC's on the network. M.

Wireless accessing internet through desktop PC

Apologies for the simplicity of the question, but this is my first ever network, wireless or otherwise! Normally, the router would have its own connection to the net, from what I gather. However, my cable internet connects to the PC (desktop) via USB. Works fine. I have two laptops that I want...

Clicking on Explorer creates a shortcut

Update: The IE icon creating the shortcuts was IE6, the one in the startup menu was IE7. This explains the glitch creating the shortcuts. This glitch may become more prevalent with time, as people move over to IE7 from installs with IE6 native. Updated definitions in AVG, AdAware did not detect...

Clicking on Explorer creates a shortcut

I did a search under a few different keywords, couldn't find anything in any of the fora. I'll do a concerted effort to clean up the PC of anything oddball this evening, and then do a HT scan. It *may* turn out to be a combination of things. If it does prove awkward, I can just format the...

Clicking on Explorer creates a shortcut

That's what I initially thought. However, this "double clicking creating a shortcut" *only* happens for IE. Combined with MSN going missing, I suspect it *may* be an MSN exploit that occurred. M.

Clicking on Explorer creates a shortcut

Odd one this. May not be a virus. I did a repair install of XP (SP2 CD) in order to clean up a few things. Install went fine, set to download updates. All updated, no problems reported. Next day, my GF ran my PC to do a few things, and got hit by numerous pop-ups. Machine runs with ZoneAlarm...

Recommend High Capacity CD Storage with Sleeves

The sleeves are plastic, take a disk both sides of a fabric middle to prevent scratching, with a plastic "hanger" built into it, they sit in like suspension files. Nothing fancy, but sure does do the job. I keep approx 150 backup DVD's in mine, it's about 10" long by about 5" square. M.

Recommend High Capacity CD Storage with Sleeves

I deal with a crowd called SVP communications in the UK, carriage might cost you a bit, but you'll probably be saving anyway. Not exactly what you're after, but might be a solution. I have one of their smaller units, great quality for the price (i.e. doesn't fall apart, takes a fair bit of...

    SATA & IDE together

Thanks folks. As I said, I'm in need of storage. Judging by how fast I used up 260Gb (60Gb external disk as well), I'm going to slot in a pair of 250Gb SATAs in the next few weeks. Time for a new PSU then! Michael

    SATA & IDE together

Excellent, thanks Martin! Didn't think there would be any issues (separate controllers for IDE and SATA) Time to go shopping! Michael

    SATA & IDE together

I'm currently running a 2.4 P4 with a gig of ram on a giga-byte GA-K1100 (can't remember exact model) motherboard. I currently a CD & DVD drive on one IDE channel, and 80gig (system) and 120gig (storage) drives on the other channel. My drives are insufficient for my storage purposes, co could...

    Drive choice for fresh install

IslandCustom- I'm definately considering splitting the controllers to each have an optical and physical drive, it does make sense, the processing involved in video is long enough that even a small improvement is a big time saving. Probably the way I will go is: Channel 1: 80 gig OS drive / DVD-R...

    Drive choice for fresh install

OK, I'm about to do a fresh install of XP. I have two drives that I could use to host the OS (XP Pro), so I have a few options. Drive 1: 120 Gb 7200rpm 2mb cache (seagate) Drive 2: 80 Gb 7200rpm 8mb cache (seimens) Both drives are ATA133. My current OS drive is an old 5400rpm unit, which...

    Extra heat with Hyperthreading off?

Folks, a quickie for y'all- Running a 2.8 GHz P4, 800 MHz FSB, with Hyperthreading. Gigabyte 8IK1100 mobo.
