okay, I've done this and the program comiles OK but then fails at the link step "Undefined symbol .SYSTEM". Am I missing somthing in my environment setup?

I have a lot of experience in the Mainfraime Environment using Cobol CICS DB2 etc.. but also have Unix experience. I know many of the non .com startups use these kind of systems but how relevant is this likely to be in the future?
Can you check if another CICS region is active under CICS/6000?
I know in OS390 CICS you can use the INQUIRE CICSSTATUS commmand, this is apparently unavailable.
Also is it possible to check if DB2 (UDB) is active using CICS/6000?

Call me stupid but can you explain this a little more for me?
If I have an environment variable called $USER how do I pull this into the program using your solution.

Is it possible to make a call to the Operating System (ie AIX) using IBM's Visual Age for Cobol. I would like to be able to execute a script from within a Cobol program.
