Yes, the hmc can be used to upgrade the firmware on both managed systems.
How you perform the upgrade depends on what level of firmware you want. IBM documents how to perform the upgrade as well as prerequisite information such as what level the HMC must be before upgrading a managed system...
If it's a JS20 blade, the NIM server and client may need to be on the same network. There's some extra configuration work required.

What type of client host is it? Is it a LPAR? Standalone machine? P4, P5?
Is the client connected to an HMC? If connected to a HMC (or it has a console display), have you booted the host into SMS and then changed both the boot device order and the remote ipl options to tell it how to connect...
I've got p570s at much older levels than SF235 on which I performed these steps successfully.
It will work unless the frames in question are 575, 590, or 595s. Those frames require power cycles because they contain internal hubs.
NIM allows you to define another NIM network object in case the client and server reside on different networks. You can then associate the client with that network. You may need to do this.
If new to NIM, check out the man page for the nimdef command which will allow you to preview and then...

Is the HMC configured as a private DHCP server on eth0?
If the 570 is the only frame connected to the p5 HMC and the HMC is a private DHCP server, you can...
