Well, it's the videocard! Grrr!
I feel really stupid now. Can't believe that I didn't think of just trying it without the video card.
Oh well, I guess now I gotta see if Newegg will let me return the new motherboard.
Man, what a mess!
Thanks everyone for all your help.
OK, here goes a stupid question but I have to ask... By "short the pins" you just mean put something metal like a screwdriver so that it touches both pins, right?
Thanks Ben and Tony.
I'm in the middle of some things this morning but I'm going to try your suggestions this afternoon and post my results.
I didn't realize that bad memory or video card could cause such symptoms. I always thought that at least the PSU, CPU and case fans would come on and...
Hey Tony,
Thanks for your quick reply!
Yes, there are two onboard "buttons". One for turning it on and one for resetting it.
Both are lit but nothing happens when I push either one.
I wondered if it was possible that something was wrong with the power switch cable from the front control so I...
Hello,
A couple of months ago we had lightning strikes and several of our PCs were affected. I've replaced parts and all of them are OK except my son's PC.
When I push the power button nothing happens. No fans come on, no beeps, NOTHING!
So I thought the PSU was bad. Replaced it with a brand...
Thanks everyone for all your replies.
I agree with the posts about insurance. I've already been dinged by them for another claim. It's amazing that you pay all that money into it but when you want to actually USE it for what it's intended for they raise your rates. So we've basically decided...
Thanks everyone for all your replies.
I'm still going to try and figure this out but it just dropped in priority because my dad said to just get him a new PC. This was like the last straw for him. He's been bugging me to just get him a replacement PC for awhile anyway.
The current one is an...
Thanks.
I flushed the dns and reset the winsock entries. By the way, (I didn't know this until the command didn't run and I had to dig around a bit) it should be "netsh winsock reset catalog".
Then I rebooted and ran ipconfig again. The DNS suffix is still blank.
Opened Hosts file from...
Cool. Is it safe to assume that I could plug the ethernet cable coming out of my cable modem into the in-line surge protector and then plug that into my router?
That seems to be the best way to protect all the pcs from any spikes coming through the ethernet cables.
Thanks for the links
Most of it was plugged into surge protectors but they weren't quality ones (obviously), just ones you'd buy at your local hardware store.
I've been reading about this today and it seems that another way that things get affected is via the cable modem. It comes in thru there and travels thru...
My dad's PC will not connect to anything using IE. Every address returns "Page cannot be displayed" message. However, if I go to command line and ping something it comes back with a reply.
Doing "ipconfig" returned a strange name in the DNS Suffix field. I didn't write it down but it was...
Hello,
We had some pretty heavy storms here the other day with lots of lightning. It really did a number on the pcs, laptops, xbox, etc. in the house.
It "fried" the NICs of all the computers connected to the network whether they were turned on or not. It also seems to have hosed the linksys...
Thanks for all the replies. To answer your questions...
Q - Is the ATI card configured as the primary video card in BIOS?
A - No, I didn't know that was possible or necessary. I've got it configured as the primary in the Display Properties settings.
Q - did you remove the ATI card?
A - No...
Just one last update. All the parts arrived Tuesday I was able to put everything together with no problems. Hope I don't jinx it now. : )
My son loves his new PC.
Thank you EVERYONE for all your input.
David
Never mind. I'm an idiot!
It had recognized it I just didn't know where to look. When I went into the boot priority screen and scrolled down through the list of devices I found the DVD drive.
Sorry for the confusion.
Hello,
I just finished putting together a new PC using this motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127029
When it boots up it doesn't recognize my CD/DVD drive. I know the drive works because I just took it out of another PC where it worked fine.
I've checked...
Thanks for the responses. Could someone explain under what circumstances you would need TWO video cards?
These things are monsters compared to video cards I've seen and I'm having a difficult time imagining why you'd need two.
My son mostly plays games like Eve, World of Warcraft, and Rome...
First of all, thanks everyone for all your replies.
My son wanted to wait after Christmas so he could get all his Christmas money together. So I've been looking and looking and I think I've finally found the configuration. The only thing I'm stuck on is how to determine which video cards are...
I read in a couple of places that people were having trouble with the 64-bit version of XP. That's why I asked.
I tell 'ya, if you don't do this a lot (build high-performance PCs) it can be really overwhelming. The choices are just staggering. Everytime I think I've finally got it something...
