How to create additional instance in existing cluster

Ok... Im not sure if this is possible however hopefully someone knows that answer. I have an existing two node failover SQL 2005 cluster. The cluster hosts "VirtualSQL01" which includes the default instance. I would like to install a new named instance onto "VirtualSQL01" however I can not...

    Unusual error following DC reboot

I have built two DC's (Windows 2003 SP2) which serve the one domain. When I reboot both DC's at the same time each server displays the message "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted", when I connect over RDP immediately afterward the reboot. This message remains...

    Quick question regarding event log

In Windows 2003, starting and stopping services should generate service control messages in the system log (SP1 onwards). The security log also details starting and stopping services. I have resolved the issue after finding the fix on the MS site. I shall publish when I dig out the link.

    Quick question regarding event log

Does anyone know the policy setting to write service control messages to the event logs (ie a service stopping and starting). I have enabled all the Audit Policy settings. However, any service being stopped and started doesnt write an entry to the logs? Thanks

    Event Log

You can edit audit settings within the local policy on the workstation. This is assuming the workstation isnt picking up a group policy. If so, the audit settings will revert to what ever is dictated by the domain.

    Mass update in AD

I would use the Microsoft DSTOOLS (eg dsquery and dsmod depending what you are doing) within a script. As long as you have a file containing all the account names you want to modify you should be fine.

DC can see member server but not Vice versa - advice ?

I would be surprised if the problem is domain level is you can not ping the DC from server2. Are both machines on the same IP network? Have you looked at ROUTE PRINT to see if server2 is looking in the wrong place for the DC. Are you pinging the servername [and hence should be resolving] or...

Disabling inactive AD accounts within Windows 2000 domain

All, I need some advice on how to routinely disable accounts which havent been used for X amount of weeks within a W2K AD environment. My preferred route of performing this task is down the microsoft script / util route rather than a third party utility. One method of establishing the last...

Configure DNS server details outside NIC properties GUI

Yep, there are quick one liners which will pull back the DNS server's address, though I can restrict who has access to run the commands on the box. I need a method of enabling DNS lookup without making it obvious the IP of the DNS server.

Configure DNS server details outside NIC properties GUI

Unfortunately the IP is static so no DHCP server is used. Like you say I need to keep the IP's of the DNS servers as guarded as possible. If I enter them within the NIC properties GUI you can simply query them via a number of commands from the CLI.

Configure DNS server details outside NIC properties GUI

I simply need to specify the IP's of the DNS servers but outside the normal NIC properties GUI. As such the IP's will not appear within the GUI but will be available to process DNS requests. Once specified I should be able to perform NSLOOKUPS. Thanks

Configure DNS server details outside NIC properties GUI

All, I need to find a method of specifying within the OS the IP addresses of the DNS servers are on the network. However, for security reasons, I need to do this outside the normal NIC GUI [ NIC --> Rightclick --> IP details]. There is a switch within the LMHOST file to say which server is a...

    performance alerts question

The link below should help. There are a number of utils (all Microsoft) which can be scripted to check the status of your arrays. In essence they give a command line version of Disk Manager. If you can script the status of your array you can output to a log file and email to whoever...
