I dont think you have wasted your time. we all start some place. I never knew that work around, I am sure there are many others that do not know.

I think it depends on what you what from powerpoint and how you intend to use your slide, I have files with over a 1000 slide written in Powerpoint 2002. Most contain a lot of animation.
If you need to send your file to other then there could be the problem of compatability, on the other hand...
You should have no problem, I send powerpoint animated files all over the world. The only problem is if like myself you keep updated.
2002 has a lot of functions that will not work on computers that are still back with the ark and as of yet there is no pack and go to support it.

Paste it into Excel, then use the "copy as" function, copy as bitmap then past it into paint.
To use the copy as function.
Highlight the pic hold down the shift key and press edit
you will see a function "Copy Picture", click and copy as bitmap. you can then paste to paint...
