    check for bad memory, I had this problem , or at least a similar one and it was 2 bad memory sticks. replaced, and the machine worked like a new one !

    have you tried to contact compaq for restore disks??? I can hardly believe that they weren't supplied with the computer. if not try a full format with say partition magic 7.0,run fdisk, and then do a clean install with the win xp pro disk.

    I had a compaq that would reboot everytime the phone would ring,.whether online or not turned out to be a modem driver problem ,......so that it is probably in your modem

    windows XP paging file

    running norton firewall 2002 will cause a "virtual memory minimum too low" message,..........if this is the case set your paging file size to 1 gig, and it will stop that message,.......it is an issue with norton ....they are working on a fix
