WinME is bad OS, it has a very poor HDD management... (not to mention that it is unstable, unreliable, poor memory management, and so on) that is most likely why your HHD with ME failed while 98 still works fine... Anyway, try connecting the bad drive as secondary (slave) drive, load win98 off...

the best solution is calling your HDD manufacturer, they usually can provide you with some funky driver that loads into your boot record and makes the whole drive visible to OS. I know that Maxtor and WD (western digital) were lewtting me download those drivers off their website some time...

if u email me your home address, i could possibly send you an longer (and older) IDE cable. The cables that i have are older cables pulled out of some old hypertower servers (about 3' in length, yes 3 feet)... so they will work for testing, but your speed might go down because of the cable age...
