    Cannot print

rphips, Do you have split tunneling enabled? Without it, the user cannot print to a networked printer in Network 2 while in the tunnel to Network 1. Basically when he is tunneled into Network 1, he can only use Network 1 devices, if the VPN is configured to allow that. I am not recommending...

Account Lockout Failure Audit events 672 & 675 on Windows Server 2003

sxmont, Has your user recently changed his password? Did he leave himself logged on a different machine somewhere? When I had a user who repeated did the above, I would have to look at the security event logs on the DCs for ID 644 to find out what machine she left herself logged in on. Of...

Unable to put NICs into Gig mode

biglebowski, We do not have Cisco switches, but have found that the NIC cards on the HP servers must be set to "auto" instead of to a GB in order for them to run at a gig. Then with our switches set to a gig, the servers run at a gig. Might give it a try. Kmills

    Reduce Broadcasts

iolair, Depending on your switching equipment and if you have arp requests for the same devices, you might be able to put in some static ARP entries. We had to do that because of Windows Network Load Balancing and the way our switches handled it. The Windows NLB issue is well documented, which...

It prints a white page ahead of printed pages :(

Daniel, Do you have Banner pages turned on for that printer? Since you didn't mention your computer type or OS, just google for "HP Deskjet 3050 Banner page" for a link to the HP documentation on how to turn it on or off. KMills

Phaser 7760 Cyan Faded On ~1/2 Of The Page

quikeyman, Had a large printer once, don't remember brand, that was printing faded in some areas. Turns out it was plugged into a power strip & not getting sufficient electricity. After plugging it directly into a different outlet, never had that problem again. I know, sounds strange -- but...

675 Kerberos errors on server w/ account lockout

Borvik, Does this user ever log onto a different machine on the network (& forgot to log off)? Map a drive (that didn't disconnect)? Click anything that says "save my password"? I have encountered all of the above causing the same symptoms you describe. Everything works fine till the...

    HP Officejet Pro 8500

Adam, Go to HP's website & read about each one. There is a difference in memory, paper size they will scan, power useage, phyisical size of unit, etc. That is why they are priced differently. Kmills

Best Way to Backup on Server

chrisb, Do you have enough space on your USB HHD to store more than one backup? On the servers where I use Windows Backup for weekly backups, I schedule 3 (use whatever number you have space for) backups -- each having a different name, each writing to a different file, each running every 3...

    Strange DNS issue

rb819, On that forwarders page, is there anything in the DNS domains box? Is the "Do not use recursion for this domain" box checked or unchecked? kmills

    Strange DNS issue

rb819, I assume all of your client computers are configured to get DNS from your DNS server. But, where is the DNS server getting its DNS? Do you have it pointed to some public DNS or to the root dns servers? Look in the properties of DNS on the DNS servers. Look at the forwarder tab. Kmills

.bat file to start/stop a service as domain admin

Phototechman, Can you set the .bat to run as a scheduled task? The schedule can be configured to run under NT Authority as part of the system. That way your users won't need a password. I don't know if a power user can manually run a scheduled task, however. Kmills

    Accessing PDM on 506E

Geoff, Java versions are the key to using PDM with Cisco products. Native1 JVM (VM 3809)or Java Plug-in 1.4.2 or 1.5.0 is the level for PDM 3.0.4, according to this page: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/pix/pix63/pdm30/release/notes/pdmrn304.html Kmills

    PIX 501 PDM Version Download

RNW2, Here is an option that I use due to Java incompatibilities. I installed Sun's VirtualBox (free) on my computer, then built up a client system within it. That way I can run the things that need an older version of Java from that virtual client machine. I know it is a bit clugy to do it...

"There is an IP conflict with another system on the network"

barnegattech, Have you check the hosts file on all your computers (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) to see if there is an entry in it causing problems? I ran into that once. Good luck kmills

    user privilege Privilege Level problem

Badenough, Do you use the GUI? In there, the last thing I do after I've created and applied a local user is to edit that user's properties. (Configure :: Remote Access VPN :: AAA Setup :: User :: Edit). That is where & when I set their privileges. You are right that creating a new...

    IP address of printer

Julia, After you reserve the IP address on your DHCP server, you need to power off the printer and turn it back on. Occassionally, I had to power off, unplug the network cable, then plug it back in & turn on the printer (because my switches were hanging onto the old address). Anyway, that...
