SMS still inventories using the profile of the SMS service account. So, for network printers and such, it will inventory those devices listed under that profile (which usually means there are no such devices installed under that profile).
You can do a bit of a workaround to get the inventory...

SMS can distribute anything you can put together, .exe, .bat, .msi, .cmd, etc., etc.
SMS does include a repackaging utility called SMS Installer, which does a great job at creating packages. It also has a utility built into it that will create .msi's out of standard distributions.
