Thanks, linney, for your reply; I've checked out the link you provide, but, whilst it mentions the /3G switch, it says it only applies to Window Server 2003. In all my searching, I've found only one very obscure and oblique reference to this behaviour in XP; unfortunately I can't remember where...- robbo43

If you're getting an error messge regarding registry system area limit being exceded, try the following: Edit your boot.ini file in the root of C:\ If it contains /3G in a line in the [operating systems] section, remove it! I had this problem & I had made three changes at virtually the same...- robbo43
