    You are right. It is a bummer :) If you want to clear all images/graphics embedded in a Word file you can do it by using "Find and replace". Find ^g and replace with nothing (whitespace). Hit "replace all". ^g finds all images and graphics. I hope you find a solution for your problem :)...

    What you have to do is index the words in Word BEFORE you import your .doc file to InDesign. In Word you open your 1000 page book and choose "Insert ..." -> "Reference" -> "Index". Now you want to generate your index automatically, by using a seperate Word file containing all your index words...
