Synchronizing data from SQL Server 2000 to MySQL

I was wondering how difficult it would be to synchronize data from SQL 2000 with MySQL. I assume that XML would allow me to do this. I have done with different SQL versions but never MySQL. Is it much different?

    Is ODBC obsolete?

Will ADO.NET make ODBC basically obsolete? ADO/OLE-DB compliant databases are more common and much faster to access that using ODBC. I am not sure about the equivalent standard to ADO in J2EE. There must be an alternative to JDBC. Are there any thoughts on this?
