There is a post on the Data Mining and Predictive Analytics Web log, Free And Inexpensive Data Mining Software, which may be of interest:

Note the discussion which follows in the Comments section, as well.
There is an excellent set of data mining tutorial presentations by Andrew Moore at:

Since late last year, I have been writing a Web Log, called "Data Mining in MATLAB", which may be of interest to readers here. It is located at:

I moved away from commercial data mining tools several years ago in favor of writing my own code (in MATLAB). I was wondering: Do people here use commercial (or even free) tools, or do you build your own analysis software?

I asked this question a year ago, almost to the day, and I wonder what peoples' answers would be now?
I was wondering what people here are using data mining for? (direct marketing, customer defection prediction, etc.)
I just wanted to let interested parties know that I am making available a number of my data mining articles and other technical resources on Will's Technical Page, at will.dwinnell.com

Recent tragic events have made me wonder about the ability of data mining to combat terrorism and other forms of crime. Does anyone know about such applications?

Over the past few weeks, a lively debate has developed over on Usenet in comp.ai.fuzzy and one of the stats groups. While many different topics have been brought up, the participants seem to fall into two camps over the basic issue of whether fuzzy logic is legitimate or not.
I was wondering...
Does anyone know of any practical applications for maze generation or solution? "DDJ" ran an interesting article a few years back on solving mazes using cellular automata (CA), and I have wondered if there are any workaday uses for such techniques?
I am curious as to whether data miners here had preferences for rule-based systems, neural networks, decision trees, etc. for data mining? What have your experiences been?
