Getting strange delays (up to 5 seconds) on my Toshiba laptop when opening an explorer window eg. My Documents. Everything else seems to be fine and the windows respond OK once they've started.
BTW the window appears in the task-bar 1st almost straight away, and then eventually the window pops...
When my PC can't find something on the 'net (say a dead www address, can't connect to the email server or whatever) it keeps on bringing up the dialup dialog despite me telling it to 'NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION' in Internet Options... Any way to make it behave? Thanks!
I have a laptop and would like to keep the 'my documents' folder synchronised with my desktop over the network - what's the easiest way to do this? (Preferably free!)
Cheers!
Is there any way I can use a PC as an external firewire/USB drive? Just come across this feature in Macs, very useful - you can boot em straight into 'drive' mode where they will slave exactly like a normal external drive.
One of my clients has 2 XP machines and 2 licences for them. Somehow the same serial no. has been entered on both - not a problem, but they want everything legit, so can they change the serial even now, after activation?
Just recently my box started closing Explorer with this error, 'to protect my computer'...
Seems to happen whenever I close all Explorer windows.
Running AVG and sygate firewall so I don't think it's a virus, just some cancer-like Winblows problem.
Can't figure this one out, ZIP files default 'opener' is Windows Search!
Tried setting it to Explorer in file types, no effect :(
(WinXP SP2)
Thanks!

Thought this slowdown was normal (ie. PC runs slowly whilst burning a CD - slow to open windows etc) ... till I used my rubbish PC at work to burn a CD and experienced no slowdown at all!
My system is OK - 1GB RAM, 1.66Ghz Athlon, 2 yr old 48X CD-RW, but everything kind of g r i n d s to a...
Installed a 250GB drive on a client's Win2000 Server machine but it only appears as 120GB. Is this a Win2000 Server limitation or some kind of motherboard/BIOS issue?
Many thanks,
Bill.
I've been having trouble tracking down rogue permissions in WinXP - certain subfolders don't seem to be inheriting the permissions I set above them.
Does anyone know a way that I can search for particular permissions being active within a registry branch?
(eg. "hkey current user/blah/secure/"...
How can I stop an XP machine logging out after 15 minutes or so?
Thought it was the screen/energy saver settings but I've turned em all off and it still logs itself out.
Many thanks,
Bill.
On my brothers laptop - surfing works fine but he can't get hotmail or anything in both IE and Opera as web forms (user/pass) are not working!
Thanks
Bill.
My taskbar is misbehaving in O2003 - buttons like 'find a contact' are maximising themselves to fill the whole strip and buttons dissapear. They return if I select them from the pulldown on the right, only to dissapear when I select another button from the pulldown.
Not sure if I've explained...
I've seen earlier posts similar to this, but mine doesn't resemble any of them exactly.
Basically I just get a blank window where the Windows search tool is meant to appear. Not the web search, the files, text etc. search.
missing link or something?
cheers,
Bill.
