Does anyone know for sure when the counters like udpInOverflows, udpInCksumErrs etc. that you see with netstat, get reset? Is it after a reboot or after plumbing the interface/nic?
Thanks!!
We are running NB 6.5.3, Solaris.
Our site is fairly small and we only use a couple of tapes for full back ups. I would like to make a copy of the tapes and send them to an alternate site for off site storage, and keep the originals here on the main site. What is the best way to do this?
Our...
Does anyone know how Solaris determines/uses the free disk space when performing a Live Upgrade?
If I have 10gb of free disk space in /opt, will Solaris use that or do I need to allocate 10gb to a slice and just not use it?
We have a 136gb disk and I have plenty of space, but just not sure how...
Doing a live upgrade from Sol 9 to Sol 10. I have the Sun Docs and am using them. I also found a few step by step guides via Google that look real good and is much easier to follow.
I have an available disk to put Sol 10 on and will put the boot env on it etc. The guides I found have you make...
We have a HP EVA 6000 San with a LUN containing 350gb of data. We are running out of space on that LUN so we created a larger LUN. Now we need to copy the data from the old LUN to the new. I am not the Admin of the SAN and don't know anything about it. I'm the Unix Admin.
The San admin says...
Is there anything special that needs to be done to start using a different new catalog tape or can I just remove the current one and replace it with a new one?
Also, what is recommended for the retention period for the catalog backups? I think mine was set to a week and I was thinking of...
Hi all,
I am in the process of setting up a Fiber Transport Media Server to perform backups from our SAN. I just read that one of the requirements is for a special Sun badged (Qlogic) HBA.
By accident I ran across some documentation that said to put the HBA card in a 133MHz PCI slot. Well...
In setting up a syslog server with Solaris 10 and using ZFS for the entire disk, is there any reason to create zones? From what I have read I should still be able to take snapshots of the one Global zone, restrict CPU usage, restrict disk usage etc withing the Global default zone.
The...
Has anyone used this book to get their Sol 10 certification?
Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 10 Study Guide (Exams CX-310-200 and CX-310-202)
by Paul Sanghera
Just wondering if it would be worthwhile. All comments, good and bad, would be appreciated.
Thanks
Anyone have a script or any idea of how to put a load on the system to force the cpu to 100%? Actually, anything over 80% will do:))
I am in the process of limiting Oracle to 79% max cpu utilization and need a way to test it.
Thanks,

I started multiplexing a few days ago and am trying to find out if my backups are going any faster. Before, I could just look in the Activity window in the Gui and get the info. There was only one job per server.
Now, there 4 or 5 jobs for each server. I have been fooling around with the...
I always see
/usr/lib/saf/ttymon -g -h -p console login: -T sun -d /dev/console
on all of our servers. We are running Solaris 9.
Why do we get this? Nobody is is logged into the console.
Thanks,
Gallows
Has anyone used the aset untility in Solaris 9?
I read the man pages but would like to have some additional info on it before I start to play around with it. I don't have a test system I can use and need to be careful.
Thanks,

Does the root account read the /etc/profile when logging in?
They want me to change the umask to 077 in /etc/profile and I don't want to mess with root's umask.
tks,

How do you all handle your /var/adudit logs?
I know about audit -n etc. But what do you use to compress or handle them? This is on a Solaris 9 box. I know about logadm.conf etc, but is there something else or a better way to compress/delete these logs?
tks
If you set up IPMP as Active/Active I understand that data will be sent from both interfaces. Does anyone know if the IP address is masked so that it appears that the data is coming from the same IP address?
We have an application that expects data from one IP address only so I don't see how we...
We recently upgraded from 5.1 to 6.5.
6.5 is great, but a completely different animal. Our major problem was, and still is, a licensing issue:))
Anyway, I made the mistake of adding several tapes to the robot that were 4 years old. I had to put new labels on them as some already had the tape...
Is there any "system" setting that can prevent writing to /opt?
I created a directory /opt/test. Perms are 755, owner root.
We have an application that is run by root and needs to write to that directory but can't. /opt is a separate filesystem but is not mounted as read only.
Any ideas?
tks
We have the latest version/patches of Sendmail, Solaris 9.
Currently, we use a relay set up to send to our Exchange server.
What we would like to do is for all incoming mail to be routed back out to a different email address on the Exchange Server. In other words, we do not want to have to log...
I have a couple of 72gb disks left over and would like to combine them to make a 140gb drive. Is this possible with Solaris 9 LVM? I read how to mirror, stripe, raid 5 etc, but didn't see anything about just putting the two together.
These are internal disks on a V440.
Thanks,
Gallows
