I get this error code, with text "... checking license ..." on starting XP Professional on a Dell laptop. I'm aware of the MS workaround which involves editing the registry in SAFE mode. Unfortunately, F8 to enter safe mode at boot does not work. So my question is - why doesn't F8 work as usual?
For some reason, an XP install CDROM wouldn't boot on a new system. Obviously, I got a new one to replace it. But it got me thinking - was there any way I could have started SETUP from the un-bootable disk, given that it won't run under DOS?
