metareplace vs deleting replicas and detaching.

Hello all, Can anyone clarify when a metareplace is done as opposed to a complete removal of the replicas and detaching? I have a failed drive which was recovered by a hot spare. In this case after replacing the drive can I do a metareplace? Thanks.
