I've been assigned the task (at my work) of switching our Windows servers over to Linux servers (due to overwheelming M$ costs). I am using RedHat beacuse I am most comfortable with it. I have already done the fileserver successfully and will be doing the mailserver shortly. What I am after...

    AMD or Pentium?

I have always been told that pentiums are better than AMD, and always used pentium processors myself. I have read heaps of documentation that puts AMD down saying that their processors run hot and have a low fault tolerance. However, I just started getting more into building computer, etc...

    Disable Prefetch

I have heard that disabling the Prefetch can be beneficial. I usually delete the files in C:\Windows\Prefetch monthly and there is a lot of obselete entries. I can't see any real benefit of having a Prefetch to start off with. Is it worth disabling or should I leave it alone? Thanks All...

    Monitoring CPU and HDD temperature

I would like to know how to set up temperature monitors for my Hard disks and CPU. I am revamping my case and it would be good to have some temperature monitoring. By this I mean so software such as gkrellm can read the CPU and hard disk temperatures. Any help or pointers to some websites...

    Securing Windows XP

For a single user PC, is it a good idea to have a Admin account and another resticted account for yourself (like it is usually set up in Linux)? Will this make it less likely to get Viruses, trojans, etc.

    Power supply?

I am a little confused with the computer power supply. My current supply (300W) has all the power outlets taken up. This is only used to power my two hard drives and two CD-ROMs. I recently got a thermaltake crystal orb (video card chipset fan), and I had to run it from a case fan plug on...

    Simple LILO question

I have a question about LILO. I currently use my WinXP bootloader and have a reference to linux in the Boot.ini config. When Linux boots, LILO prompts to select DOS or Linux to load. This is unecessary, as I want it to boot straight to Linux with no intervention. This is my lilo.conf file...

I am setting up a triple boot system for my friend with: 1. WindowsXP 2. WindowsXP (for testing unstable applications) 3. Slackware 9.0 Not having used LILO before, I am tempted just to do a: dd if=/dev/hda of=/tmp/bootsect.lnx bs=1 count=512 and copy that to c:\ and add an entry to the...

Remove 'ALL USERS' from Documents and Settings

Does anyone know if you can safely delete the 'ALL USERS' directory from 'Documents and Settings'? The reason I want to do this is that I am the only user, and the folder is pretty much empty. The only time I need to use anything from there is when an application puts its shortcut in the...

    Western Digital HDD gone noisy...

I recently bought a Western Digitial 7200RPM 40Gb HDD (2 Meg cache, not the newer 8Mb cache that has a 3-yr warranty). The read head in the drive started playing up and missing, and the drive was replaced under warranty. With my replacement drive in, after a month, it is now starting to be a...
