    reinstalled windows &can't change screen area/color res

    I completely reinstalled windows 98 2nd edition and i tried changing the screen res to 800 x 600 and the color to 256 but the option isnt there and the screen res pointer thing wont slide. it was fine changing on my last windows. please help. thanks.
