    SFC doesn't replace files

When I run SFC I am requested to insert the CD and all goes smoothly with "SFC completed successfully" in my event viewer upon conclusion. If I immediately run sfc again I am soon requested to insert the CD. Checking "cancel" and subsequently the event viewer indicates the same file(s) are...

    OS doesn't recognize added HD.

I just bought a new PC with WinXPhome (NTFS). I took the HD from my old PC (Win98SE, FAT32) and installed it so that I could access my old files. It shows "Healthy (active)" in computer management, but I can't assign a drive letter and can't access the data on it. Must I create a dual-boot...

    “fsutil dirty set c:”

Hi all, My (XP home) refuses to run chkdsk from the command line (ignores it on reboot), or to run from local disk (C:)/properties/tools/error checking, when either "fix" or "attempt recovery of..." is checked. It DOES run when I set the "dirty" bit. Does anyone...

    Task scheduler forgets

Hi, Does anyone know how to make task scheduler remember to run a task if the PC was not on at the scheduled time? Or a good workaround? TIA Bull

ghuzz You may have had a bad connection which you made good while cleaning. While dust could impair the cooling and lead to overheating, it wouldn't happen while booting, but later after warm-up. Probably an hour or more.

Is SP1 part of current XP PRO?

Has MS incorporated it into current releases? If so, which rev includes it? Am going to dual boot Pro over Win98SE and don't want to do the download if it's unnecessary. TIA for any info.

    Reset Administrator Password

There is a simple way to reset the Admin password in XP. I found a reference to it at another site, acquired it and used it successfully. If anybody needs it, tell me how to send. "Winkey.rar"

    Powerdown monitor or keep running?

I want expert opinions. Is it better to power down or leave on a monitor if it won't be used for 1 hour, two hours, four etc. Where is the consensus crossover point? Assume the electric bill is not as important as the monitor. Has anyone seen a manufacturer's recommendation? TIA for all...

    Clear Systen Restore Accidentally

Always interested in finding troubleshooting methods, I tried M$ Msconfig selective startup. No help, but deleted all previous Systen Restore points; presumably from starting without services running. How's that for kickin' 'em when they're down?

    Can't install (USB) keyboard

Months ago I had problems with my Compaq USB keyboard in my Compaq presario. I got and have been using a no-name PS2 keyboard. Because my computer had many OS problems (home edition, SP1) I did a complete reinstall, not an overlay, a month ago---it works MUCH better. But, when I now try to...

    NAV/NPF 2003

Since installation, I notice (using task manager) that boot is a two stage process; first the OS, then several minutes later Norton. Anybody know why the delay---how to change/prevent it?

    Taskmanager doesn't compute

This is a curiosity, not a problem (I hope). Does anybody know why Taskmanager shows 99% idle AND 7% usage. I've got XPHESP1. TIA, Bull

    Tired of making coasters?

I thought four out of five successes at 16X was pretty good until I tired Priority Master. Now I run at 24X and haven’t had a failure yet. This program lets you assign high (like for your burner) or idle (for things like virus scans or defragging), in your startup file. I had a little trouble...

    "OPTIMIZED" constantly changing startup order

Does anybody have a clue how to stop XP from continually trashing the startup order of programs. I believe a lot of problems are caused by this "optimization" and would like to STOP it after a clean boot. All clues will be appreciated.

    Keyboard dead at logon.

When I try to boot, my keyboard is often dead, which makes it VERY difficult to enter my password. Sometimes a "safe boot" helps; usually if I insert a floppy when the keyboard doesn't respond it helps. Usually a "restart" is more successful than a "cold" boot...

Priority--how to change default in XP?

When I run a player such as Realplay, the sound is intermittantly slowed. If I increase the priority in Task Manager it provides a great improvement. When the song is over it reverts to normal. Does anybody know where the default is established/if it can be changed? I have looked in Registry...
