To me, now using Linux full time, that X-window is not as slick or polished as Microsoft Windows.
In X-window, the interface objects such as comboboxes, buttons, etc are not quite as good as MS window ones.
KDE is my preferred desktop and one particular thing I notice is dialogboxes in general...
Why is SUSE linux so brain-dead with respect to video files.
I can't play ANYTHING - why?
Are all linux versions the same or should I just junk SUSE and get something else?
or possibly database implementors (i.e those persons who set up databases and queries for banks etc...);
my surname is st.clair
you will notice the dot or period in the name.
it is not two seperate words or anything weird yet it still seems to throw people using databases.
One thing i've...
For example at my local library internet cafe - the usual windows (xp) logon screen has been replaced with the library's
own version.
What windows API function(s) allow you to do this?
I'm not asking much - just an absolute definitive answer
on case sensitivity in MySQL :-) including the following:
Are user logon names case sensitive?
[I've read they are not, but they are on my version - that is to say 'root' is OK but 'ROOT' gets rejected]
TIA
Things seem to be a bit stale of late.
Have the providers run out of steam or are they planning a some big surprises for us in 2004
I assume M$ will put out a new OS - I hear they have a couple on the boil.
Will 3G phones be available?
Will Intel or AMD bring out a superchip?
Personally I...
Here in the UK, there is a lot of advertising for people to retrain for jobs in IT.
These adverts are aimed at people getting back into work, or that have been made redundant in other industries.
How is this supposed to work then?
The IT industry as it stands is overmanned and laying off...
I just noticed a thread started about MSCRM - no doubt "it's what we've all been waiting for". I have no idea what it is but i'll have a look - I have lost genuine interest when I forced to hand in Win2000 for WinXP.
I wonder if MS has any real strategy to take the PC forward?? I...
What I'm interested in is the technology that could be used to make such a smartcard ID, and how the data could be safely stored and accessed, and the type of people that would have access to it.
For example:
1. Standard data - name, address, next of kin, visa, and the usual type of data that...
Compared to other household hi-tec equipment, the computer is far and away the most complicated and convuluted to use and probably the most unreliable.
The everyday home computer user does not want to worry about
stuff like operating systems, drivers, and service pack downloading, etc..
He...
Judging by a lot of the posts in this forum, it seems that a major obstacle to getting work done is bad managers/management.
Why is this??
Is this because most managers are inadequately trained or acting beyond their capabilities?
What qualities do the members of the forum believe a 'magager'...
I have a particular aversion in particular to 'pop up'.
This has got to be the most irritating form of advertising invented - at least during commercial breaks on TV I can go and make coffee or otherwise occupy myself.
I see also on this tek-tip page as I write - a banner advertising some MCSE...
There has been in the past decade or so - a greater push for businesses to subscribe to some sort of ethical code of practice.
We have banks that subscribe to the 'Ethical' banking code here in the UK. For example - These banks would not lend to business that might want to build a dam - which...
Probably a bit off topic - not really about Ethics, but I pose the question -
Is IT or Technology addictive ??
By this I mean, do you think it possible for a person to
come to depend on a peice of technology so much that it could be said that they have become an addict in the generally...
I believe these three(the Internet, WWW and TCP/IP) are rapidly becoming victims of their own success.
OK, Internet & TCP/IP didn't take the world by storm on their debut, but we are all aware of the limitation of the IP4 addressing method.
With sound and video going over the net - a standard...
Every now and again we hear some scandal involving some company and the passing of "inducements" to seal some iffy contract.
I remember my time as a project manager.
Contracts including laptops for "remote diagnostics and monitoring" knowing full well "remote"...
Back in Win95/Win98, I must have done hundreds (dozens really) of clean OS installs to get the OS out of a mess.
In spite of the much hyped stability of WINXP and WIN2000 and WINNT, I still hear the dreaded phrase 'I've done a clean install' or ' do a clean install' all too often.
Millions of...
Personnaly I am appalled at the seemingly low levels of questions being posted to the forums.
Many of the questions come from so called 'Technical Users' and 'Programmers'.
Some of these questions from 'programmers' I can answer of the top of my head and I'm a 'technical user'.
Some of the...
