I use Office 2003 on Windows XP. I downloaded FileFormatConverters.exe from Microsoft and installed it. I am puzzled to be offered Office 2007 updates. Are these needed for security issues with Office 2003 or the file format converters? I was offered these updates while I was using Office 97...
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update Service are running. No automatic updates are forthcoming. I am unable to use Windows Update and the Windows Update GUI shows a red shield with a white cross on it. Is this a known problem and are there any fixes available? I...
Windows XP Pro on one of my machines repeatedly asks for confirmation that drivers, which I know are of good provenance (e.g. from Microsoft and AVG), are OK to use. I tried setting Driver Signing Properties to 'Ignore' instead of 'Prompt' in Control Panel->System Properties but the change...
This is the fix for a vulnerability in the Indeo codec which could allow remote code execution. Trouble is that it will not install.
The log file reads as follows: -

Since the middle of last year, a Windows update (unknown) has broken HTML help. Programs like Dreamweaver 4 and Homesite no longer have direct access to HTML based help. With Homesite, a message box appears informing me of an Invalid Floating Point Operation.
There have been 48 Windows...
Patch Tuesday - KB2483513 and shimgvw.dll
This security update appears to fail. The update is unable to overwrite shimgvw.dll in %SystemRoot%\system32.
I guess that this is the fix for the FAX image problem in which case it is not too important.
I do not suppose that the deaf monolith which...
PROBLEM NOW FIXED
I eventually found why this happened. I discovered that Terminal Services was set to start Automatically. I changed this to Manual start and everything now behaves perfectly.

IE8 cannot reach http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
The malware infection has been cleaned but there is a legacy of inaccessible sites, notably the Windows update site.
Automatic updates has also been sabotaged.
I need to know where to look to remove the blocking information.
Thanks...
The system resets - the screen goes black and the system reboots. This behaviour only seems to occur when a web browser (either IE7, Opera or Chrome) is being used.
The fact that the system is so radically affected makes me think that something at a low level like a network card driver is...
In the properties of Primary IDE channel of IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers advanced settings, the transfer mode for device 0 is PIO. Device type 0 is Auto Detection. I want to make this SATA drive be recognised as Ultra DMA capable. Any ideas what I should be prodding?

The system (C: drive) partition is OK but I cannot boot from the HDD. Partition Magic 8.5 says that the drive is bad. The Windows error-check says that the partition is OK with no errors. Norton Disk Doctor 2003 agrees.
I intend to Ghost(2003) the partition to an image, reformat the drive...
I uninstalled a Logitech Quick Messenger camera but it still appears on the TWAIN selection list. The information does appear to be in the registry so where might it be? I want to erase this information so I can see only installed devices.
Thanks.

Automatic updates offers new updates but will not download them. The little yellow shield icon disappears as soon as I click it to start the download.
I configure automatic updates to notify me but not to automatically download or install them.
Something is broken. Are there any ways to...
Windows will sometimes not allow USB file storage devices to be disconnected. A message box appears stating that a program is still accessing the device. Seems to happen after a device has been in use for a while. Quick use and disconnect seems to be no problem.
I shut the system down so...
I am running a fully patched Windows XP Professional SP3. Windows Explorer crashes only when the folder tree is displayed. I have mitigated the problem by using Windows Explorer without the folder tree. Doing this seems to prevent the crashes.
I need to know which files, e.g. dlls, are...
I cannot see the reassuring orange letters telling it's safe to switch off the power. I get left at the splash screen. Windows does actually shutdown safely. It just won't tell me.

I have a UPNP enabled router. I wish to use Windows 2000 for MSN Messenger 7.0 with video and audio communication. Can this be done on Windows 2000?

I am cursed with C-Media sound drivers, courtesy of Microsoft. I cannot get rid of the d----d things. I uninstall C-Media drivers with the supplied utility. I then install a Creative PCI 128 card using the Microsoft Creative drivers and the sound is terrible. It's not hardware. I know that...
The system is a fully patched Win2000 SP4 with fully patched Internet Explorer 6 SP1.
When Internet Explorer is started, its window with all the control features is painted but it takes several minutes to get the focus. Once this happens, IE behaves normally UNTIL you open another IE window...
