I'm getting deep in the mud here, I know, but appreciate your all's help and indulgence.
I want to run System File Check on my Windows 2000 computer against a byte for byte copy (from Linux's dd command) of an XP boot partition from another computer. I know I won't be able to repair any bad...
My XP won't boot and I have long since not had its Install CD. Through a convoluted use of my other computer, a Linux boot rescue CD, and a large portable USB drive I was able to run CHKDSK on a copy of the bad boot partition (chkdsk made a jillion corrections -- ran for 20-30 minutes), copy...
My wife's XP has a folder on the root drive called "copy of windows". It is not a copy of the Windows folder but a folder with that name containing 14MB in 8 subfolders and 90 files. Anybody know what this is for or where it might have come from?

I find it incredible (though not surprising) that I can't edit an email address in the Contact list without re-entering the entire address. Is there some secret way to do this? Or am I just missing it?? I'm using Office 2000. Thanks.

I'm finishing up a torturous re-install of W2000 including all updates. I reinstalled Office2000 including its updates (which are not easy to find at MS, btw), but I can't get it to use the old .pst file to recover my old messages and stuff. It is a good file (checked with SCANPST, etc), not...
I have a Dell Dimension 2350 running XP. I'm installing a new adaptor card. After the first step, to physically emplace the card with the computer OFF and unpluged, the computer will not start (power on). I reinserted and checked the power cord, pressed the start button a number of times and...
I'm starting to tackle a change of Profiles which requires Registry edits. I plan to back up the Registry since, as Windows says, a bad edit might make my system unnusable. My problem/question is: to restore a Registry or a System state, one has to get into the working Windows system which...
I'm going through a godawful reinstall of 2000, including SP4. Among other things it added "accounts" in Documents and Settings. Previously and now I have two users, one my name and the Administrator (though there may be three with profiles in Docs and Settings); Guest is and was disabled...
To make a long story short, I lost boot capabilities (any mode) with my WIN2000, have gone through all of the Repair options which finally entailed replacing a bunch of system files but got stuck with a corrupt registry (SYSTEM at least). I'm now trying a re-install but hoping to save as much...
Is there any way to make/burn an emergency bootable CD (image) for XP for us guys who have long since lost the Installation CD? My computer has no diskette drive.

a little like herkiefan's post yesterday...
Every six months or so for the past 5 years I try to create a simple graph for a simple spreadsheet. I select the x-axis ("column") for a data series that has month-year dates in approved Microsoft format. I think I'm doing it correctly (and have...
I swear I have done this before, but now I cannot get a startup program fully removed through MSCONFIG. I uncheck it, click "apply" and go through a restart. With restart I get a warning window that my startup config has changed (as if I didn't know [smile2]) and says I can leave selective...
I have 65MB in a WINNT/INSTALLER directory that I'd like to delete. Actually it is renamed INSTALLER.OLD; the real INSTALLER directory has one .msi file of ~2+MB. Can I safely delete the 65MB directory?
Also, I have about 230MB in WINNT/ServicePackFiles directory. I'm guessing that these...
Can anyone tell me why my 7 or 8 messages in my Outlook Express Inbox requires an inbox .dbx file of 24 megs? What does Wild Bill do with it all???
Though my Outlook .pst is 28 megs, but it might have 50 messages and a bunch of other stuff.......[tongue]

This is almost a repeat, with some changes. I'm unable to run SOME setup install files, nor run one or two (so far) installed application programs (notably PaintShopPro), nor save SOME attachments from Outlook2000. I'm running
Windows2000. In all cases I get varying messages that always...
Recently some of my programs -- a couple of setup (installers) and one or two applications -- won't start. I get a similar message regarding my "temp folder" as variously "invalid", "write only", "full", etc., none of which are true. Most times it refeers to WINNT/TEMP; other times to...
Recently my Win2000 started randomly shutting off the video (black screen, power still on). So far, only when on line and coincident with a selection (click) of one kid or another. But not often. The only way I can get the screen back is reboot. A couple of times it rebooted itself. Any...
Curiosity (well, mainly) question: Everything I read says without a heatsink and an embedded fan, the processor chip can burn up in less than a minute. Is this referring to just the latest (well, say PIII, maybe, and beyond) CPUs. I seem to recall PII-233MHz with a fair-sized heatsink, but NO...
Had a problem that has driven me nuts: start a program's install/setup file and either nothing at all happens or it kinda starts and then just vanishes. I don't know if I have all of the answer, but I got it working. The problem stems from W2000 handling 16-bit installation files -- basically...
I have other pecularities with 2000 running some things, but one is really odd and distinctive. Whenever I call the directory/file menu ("save as" or "open" e.g.)from Word97, it takes 20-40 seconds to show the whole list, then maybe 15-20 seconds to change directories. No...
