I am considering a Wimax USB dongle for my laptop which will allow access to the Internet anywhere in the Wimax service area. I would also like to create a Wifi at home using the Wimax dongle as the feed.
Would it be possible to use another USB port on my laptop to feed the signal back out of...
I have a Kingston 4GB DataTraveler which has stopped responding. If you try to open it in Windows, a message says:
"Please insert a disk in Drive (drive letter)"
in Ubuntu linux, the message is:
"Unable to mount location"
"No media in the drive"
If I try to format it in Windows, a message...
I have had a 500GB SimpleShare NAS attached to my network for some months and it suddenly stopped showing files.
A few days ago, I had to restart one of the computers on the network and when it came back up and I tried to access the Simpleshare, the device did not show up (and neither did...
Had a really had time trying to figure out where to post this, especially as I am using XP Home, but likely this isn't material. If it needs to be in some other forum, the moderator can move it.
Have just acquired a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop from a graduating university student and the...
I have several USB HDD's but they are "reluctant". I mean by that, when they are plugged in, a Windows message comes up that says "Found new hardware....", another that has a message that using a 2.0 port would be faster, etc. but the drives never show up in My Computer.
Device manager shows a...
Have just acquired a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop with a SATA HDD. Am trying to add an optical drive and a IDE hdd. No matter what combination of jumpers (CS, Master, Slave, etc) and cable cable connections (first or second connector), none of them have been recognized. Have tried 4 CD drives, 2...
Following an electrical storm, a computer which was unfortunately plugged in at the time, now doesn't start up. The on/off switch may also be faulty.
Tested the PSU with a PSU tester and it shows to be OK.
When it is first plugged in, the cpu fan comes on for 2-3 seconds, then goes off...
It's well past time to replace my aging Dell 4600. My needs are simple: browsing, spreadsheet, word processing, music, no gaming, but I complicate the situation by keeping multiple instances of browser windows, each with multiple tabs, open all the time, so memory is important as well as...
I recently installed Zonealarm Pro and I think that the following problem is related. While this is not technically a security issue, security minded folks are the ones who know ZA. If it needs moving to another forum, will the moderator please accomodate.
For years I have been listening to...
For years I have been listening to austinriffs.com. One clicks on "To The Shows" which takes you to a list of the shows and then one clicks on a show. At this point a blue "Apple Quicktime logo thingy" shows up then turns into a typical little music slider bar.
But recently instead of playing...
I have just upgraded to NAV 2006 and it insists on doing an initial scan, which is fine. However it started on Monday and is still chugging away on Thursday.
It is now on file 356,841 and I noticed that it really bogged down on zip files (even though I attempted to exclude zip files).
What is...
My Dimension 4500 is not getting fixed. At this stage, the principal possibities are:
Power supply dead
Mobo and/or CPU dead
off/on switch dead
other less obvious problems.
As I see it the steps are:
buy a power supply tester (so far cannot even find out if any of them will work on a Dell...
Here is an post found on another board which (I think) tells how to test a PS. If anyone has any comment or guidance before I give it a try, it would be very much appreciated.
"Just to let you know, I also had a constant green light on the MOBO. I completely removed the PSU from the unit, and...
Circumstances are: daughters' Dimension 4500 (XP) in England and I am in USA. One morning nothing happened when startup was attempted. The diagnostic lights on the back do not light up at all.
Each card has been removed and a startup attempted with the respective card out. Nothing.
HDD's were...
My very responsible 22 year old daughter was using my XP Home computer in her own user account and shopping on a well known site when the optical mouse froze. I have unplugged and replugged it and replaced it with a known good mouse, also re-started in safe mode, all for naught!
The cursor is...
I have two W2k computers (both clean installs) on my lan which have, for the most part, given solid service for 2, or is it 3 already, years without a reinstall. Both have considerable proggies installed. I suspect that they are both well past some tlc.
Which registry cleaner do you recommend...
Some months ago I was having abrupt blue screen terminations on computer number three (a slotone PIII 550 with 384MB, W2k) that I initially diagosed as CPU overheating. Took the cover off the computer and the problems went away which I thought confirmed my diagnosis.
Subsequently an electrical...
I have a Dell 4100 with a dell CD-ROM and a aftermarket CD-RW. If the puter is booted up without a CD Rom in the drive, it can see both drives, but cannot see a CD in either drive. If booted with a CD Rom in the Rom drive, it can see a disk in either.
I have a Dell 4500. Same story.
What's...
