    Solution to XP won't give drive letter to secondary HD

    Hopefully others can learn from my struggle. I did a run-of-the-mill new computer setup, then hooked up the HD from the old computer via USB (love those little cable converters) to transfer My Documents, email addresses & etc. Diskmgmt saw the drive, but XP would not assign it a drive letter...

    Odd HD failure

    3 yr old Dell, 40GB WD IDE HD on primary channel (non-SMART capable, unfortunately). On boot today, bios reported "unable to locate fixed disk" or some such similar verbiage. I checked the connections, swapped to a new 80-wire cable, tried switching the jumper from CS to Master. Tried...
