Hello, we have an aix 6.1 LPAR that seems to be experiencing intermittient performance problems when it backs up it's Progress database to a jfs2 file system. This file system had 1 Volume group with three 8-way striped meta volumes from a symmetrix array (total of 24 symm devices all on...

Hello, I am a SAN engineer in a mixed environment with many different Operating Systems including AIX 6x. I've worked with several AIX engineers (that have since left the company) zoning Virtualized HBAs to different EMC arrays. A normal non-virtualized host will log into out CISCO MDS switches...
We have a statistical application called SAS running on AIX connected to a cx380. Many users log into the system to do analysis on data in our Oracle data warehouse. Data is sucked out of the Oracle tables and inserted into temporary SAS files in a file system called /saswork. The data in...
Hello, we have been having a problem with an AIX 5.3 server that is running SAS (statistical application). It shares an EMC cx380 array with several other servers/applications. The SAS system can do very heavy IO and tends to dominate the array and slowing performance for the other...
Hello, I have a p570 running aix 5.3. I have a VG called sasvg1 - 544GB. I have one LV (saslv1) and a file system called /sasfs1. The LV and file system are about 500GB but only 55GB are currently being used by the file system.
I would like to shrink the file system to 100GB. This would give me...
I have a very write intensive file system that is 600 GB and does about 1,500 IOPS on an EMC cx380 array. I have created a Raid 1/0 Raid Group using 16 disks 8+8. I have created six 100 GB luns.
The statistical application used on this server typically writes, sorts, merges and manipulates data...

Hello, we are using extendvg/mirrorvg to migrate VGs from one symmetrix array to another. One of the Big VGs is already at the 128 PV max so we can not extendvg.
We will take an outage and manually copy all file systems in this VG to new file system names. Rather than just using the cp -R...
Hello,
We are running a statistical application called SAS on AIX 5.3 connected to a cx380 with 8GB cache on each SP. There is a temporary/work file system called /saswork. Users kick off huge queries and much of the sorting etc is done in /saswork. Currently this file system sits on a 3+1 RAID...
Hello, our two old DNS servers are being replaced by two new DNS servers with different IP addresses. For our small hosts I have used smit to add the two new name servers and then used smit to remove the old ones. I went back and verified that the resolv.conf file had the correct entries. These...
I was surprised when I looked at the VG below. I need to add several new volumes but noticed that the MAX PVs is only 10. Since it is not 32, I'm guessing that someone made some type of change to the VG and this caused the MAX PVs to reduce to 10. Does this sound correct? Is there anyway I can...
Hello,
We will be implementing HACMP later this year but at this point I have no experience with it.
I am helping a friend with the migration of several AIX 5.3 boxes from an old Symmetrix array to a new one. I was looking at lsvg output that was sent to me from two of the boxes below...
Hello, I'm running AIX 5.2 connected to an EMC dmx1000 array. Recently I was removing some old file systems and their symmetrix volumes/devices. Typically I write_disable the symm device and then wait a while. If all ok then I will unmap the device then finally dissolve the symmetrix meta volume...
Hello, we will be using mirrovg to migrate our aix 5.2 tl9 VGs to the new dmx. This works well becauce we can do the mirrorvg while the system is up and running - no outage. We will extendvg with new dmx disks and then mirrorvg from the shark vpaths to the new dmx disks. Finally we will...
Hello,
We currently have a standard VG with 30 PVs. I need to add an additional 30 but the limit for a standard VG is 32 PVs. Is there a way I can convert this VG to a "big" VG so that I take advantage of the 128 PV limit. I'm hoping I can do the conversion without taking any kind of outage.
I have many AIX Volme Groups on the shark similar to this -
appvg:
vpath0 active 147 0
vpath1 active 147 0
vpath2 active 147 0
The AIX box does not use EMC PowerPath yet. I wanted to install PP and use AIX mirrorvg to migrate -
extendvg appvg hdiskpower0 hdiskpower1 hdiskpower2
mirrorvg...
Hello,
Yesterday we had two paging spaces - hd6 and paging02. The hd6 is mirrored on hdisk0 and hdisk1 using rootvg and paging02 was mirrored on hdisk422 and hdisk423 using pagingvg. Today I doubled the size of paging02 to 7689MB. I then added a new page space called paging00 on hdisk422 (it is...
We are getting ready to upgrade our mission critical 24/7 application from 5.2 ml3 to 5.3 tl7. The application is called Credit Revue and uses a Progress database. It has many complicated components and interfaces. We have had several problems while upgrading test systems. We only have a few...
Hello, currenly we have a data center in california and a similar data center in TX. At this point I would consider each site a SAN island. Each site has a DMX1000 and two Cisco MDS 9506 switches. We may be buying two new DMX-4 arrays(one for each site) this year.
Currently the two SAN islands...
