Recommendation for LONG run time UPS for small load

Have you considered bypassing the power supply for the device you're trying to keep running? The 24vdc to 120vac conversion is fairly inefficient. You may be able run your device directly from batteries and save yourself a lot of money. It may take a bit of engineering to add a charging...

    Domain controllers on VMware

    VMware Backup products & Solutions

Chris, I use esXpress to backup the VMs and ARCserve for file level backup. I believe the next version of esXpress will support file level backups from virtual machines. I've looked at CommVault and it is very nice but also very expensive. -Jeff

    Array Expansion

Andrew, The expansion will be faster if you have the battery-backed write cache installed. If you do add that many drives, I suggest migrating to RAID 6 which gives you the ability to loose two drives simultaneously. If it's a critical machine, using one or two drives as hot spares is a good...

Question about using P2V to move a domain controller

I've done it several times with Ultimate P2V (BartPE with free tools) and had no problems. I recommend that you keep the VM-NIC disabled on the virtual machine until you get the VMware tools installed and everything is configured exactly as the physical machine was. -Jeff

    Local Storage ?

You cannot use IDE storage with VMware ESX. You may be able to find a supported RAID controller which will allow you to use IDE disks, such as 3Ware. See this: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx_io_guide.pdf -Jeff

    Cable Certifiers

Brian, I just purchased a Fluke CableIQ qualification tester and love it. I purchased the kit version for $1,500 which includes a case, toner, and six additional remote identifiers. This device has saved me lots of time and has given me peace-of-mind versus my old basic continutity tester. It...

    Old VSR Voicemail

I had a VSR do odd things many years ago. It turned out that one of the fans which kept the system cool had tied up and the heat build-up caused odd problems such as those you describe. I agree with the above post that RAM could be a problem too. Run memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/) and...

    RAID Level 1 Question

I am not familiar with Adaptec's line of RAID controllers and their capabilities, but array expansion is easy with Compaq/HP controllers. I would use an imaging tool (Ghost, Acronis, Drive Image, etc.) to create an image of the existing disks on another server or portable USB drive. Then...
