Thanks once again for the suggestion, I set up the alias, checked that I could connect to the alias name via SSMS and then I ran:
SELECT *
FROM OPENDATASOURCE('SQLNCLI','DRIVER={SQL Server};Data Source=Live24x7;User ID=UN;Password=PW;Network Library=DBMSSOCN').v4BusinessRules.DBO.FileFormats...
...which makes it no longer resolve at all, which might mean its the right setting but the wrong option for that setting. I will experiment with that

...but the scripts are easier for my colleagues to understand and update)
I'm falling over at the first hurdle
I've written the following:
SELECT *
FROM OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','DRIVER={SQL Server};Data Source=LiveBR;User ID=UN;Password=Pass').v4BusinessRules.DBO.FileFormats
Where LiveBR...
...failed to say thanks for this, although I couldn't get it running remotely due to firewall crap, I got it all runnign from the desktoop of the VPC

...= Nothing
I don't think he got it working and no one answered his post as yet. I'm more of a data guy than a VB guy so I'm a trifle lost.

...The client PC doesn't have SQL server installed, and I need to run the SQL scripts via a VB script or similar, can anyone give a bit of guidance?

Ahh right
With the number of different data sources we've got that wouldn't be very practical, but thanks for the tip!

...the database to remember the password without setting up the links again?
Sorry for the necro post, but this is exactly what I was looking for.

...the row, I have no idea what you think I would be comparing it to. Unless you think I have an enormous grid of numbers or dates for some reason?

but not all the cells in the row will equal the cell and only the cells that do will get the formatting applied

I know you can format cells with conditional formatting but how would I format the entire row the cell was on?

Oh god it's always something embarrassing whenever I post on here, thanks for the help, sorry for the stupidity

Why are the users only allowed to access one record?

The reason the recipient is seeing this behaviour is because the WMZ extension is used as the self-installing Windows Media Skin file. when they try and run it media player tries and fails to install the skin and then resumes what it was last doing.
Unfortunately Microsoft originally intended...
If you can run regedit go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
And delete everything under there, that should sort it out. if you can't run regedit, then you need to make the account you are using an administrator to fix it easily.
