In my search for answers I stumbled across from this one
" The hang up on MUP.SYS actually has nothing to do with the MUP.SYS file. This is simply the last file loaded by windows when an attempt to boot in safe mode has been selected. There are a number of issues which can cause this error. As...
@goombawaho
"Problem 4 - based on your responses, I think you're in over your head. No offense. "
None taken... I am over my head...true. THAT IS WHY I AM HERE ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE, right??? If I knew what I was doing I would not be here... 'nuff said.
It is an older computer...fine... I do...
Access the hard drive as a slave to another computer and copy all the files in C:\Dell because there will be many of the drivers you need there (possibly) making you life easier when you reload. They may not be the latest from the Dell site, but they will get your network cards and video cards...
Ok... this time I paid attention and it is not MOV.DLL
It is MUP.SYS and in searching the internet there seems to be some problem with this file and the Dell Inspiron computer.
this is one reference I have found but not read the replies yet. What he/she is talking about is very similar to what...
...whipped through a lot of files as it started to load... then it stopped on one file I should have noted what that was (I think the address was... *MOV.DLL) I am not sure I don't quite remember but I can do the test again... I wonder if this is the bad file. Could Kaspersky see this as...
Ok... PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE!
First of all I noted what was going on with the startup... the following is displayed on the screen
Intel Base-code
PXE-2.1 (Build 082j)
Copyright (c) 1997-2000 Intel Corp
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM

What would be the name of the file that I would have to edit to get rid of the Broadcom reference in booting the disk.
I am used to the old days when you had a config.sys and Autoexec.bat file... but there does not seem to be such files in XP
Jim Broadbent
Thanks for your responses.
I guess he lived with the fact it was looking for Broadcom as it booted and when that failed booted XP. He did uninstall the AVG before installing Kaspersky at least he knew not to just delete it.
the problem arose when he was scanning after the installation of...
A friend of mine has asked for help solving a puzzling problem.
He was given an older Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop which was wiped clean of user files but the computer operated reasonably well. The battery was shot but it operated on the AC adapter ok.
To add virus protection he installed the...
I hear you....While I had access I downloaded all files that were important in anyway to an external HD, which went very well.
2 days later, same problem...so that drive is in death throes but I do not care anymore.
Jim Broadbent
YAHOOO!!!!!![thanks]
I set the chkdsk d:/f to come on when the computer was rebooted and it made only 2 corrections and noted a few unreadable sectors. It made it completely true with no fatal errors.
So I brought up Explorer and the drives sorted themselves out in a second.... I clicked on...
Well I have been making progress but not complete.
this was the first run that I loaded as an attachment
this is one trial and as you can see some repair has been completed
...getting quite far and seconds later it started to recover files but then it hit a bump in the road and the...
This is a rather old HD...I transferred it to this computer when the previous computer died. So I was wrong when I said that I had a slave connection problem. It is a HD approaching death throes as I see it now following that attack or perhaps it was just a coincidence that it happened then...
Perhaps this might help a little. I ran CHKDSK D:/F on the drive and it started to fix things so as far as I can see I think my files are there but there is a problem as you can see in the attached screenshot
Jim Broadbent...
I have not done this yet...hardware is not something I am really comfortable with.
But I did enter the computer using dos and when I do a directory listing on the C drive all is fine. When I change to the d Drive it finds it alright but it returns nothing when I ask for a listing of the drive...
>> Can you clarify - are you running the computer that had the malware and it has two hard drives in it - one for operating system and one that is the D: drive? <<
Yes, I have an older HP Compaq with 2 HD (C/D) the D drive is a slave internally. The (C)drive was mainly for operation systems and...
About a year ago I suffered a pretty severe cyber attack. In cleaning up the mess that was left behind I must have deleted a critical file or did something that makes it impossible to access my slave "D" drive any more. I could for a while with trouble and moved absolutely critical files but...
My friend got sucked in by the fake Microsoft service company from India when they phoned him saying his computer was sending out an alarm. Of course, he told me about it next day after he agreed to pay the $250 and then did not wire the money. He said he was ok and the computer ran fine. Well...
Well my problems began back in October when FireFox made a rollout....I am getting tired of these rollouts so I put a stop to new ones for a while.
Right now the system is working fine...When I open Control panel earlier I saw under Internet Options/general/search settings/Toolbars and...
