    adding a 3rd router/access/bridge/repeater

amc thanks for link. going to try for a bridge/access solution, by biting the bullet and start from scratch. ie remove my older wired router A and use my current g wireless router B together with a new n wireless router C. this will at least save some energy and should simplify the setup.

    hard soft crash

last image appears to be fine - so "hardware ok". have no idea what was wrong. pc pretty locked down, and i stay in shallow end of the pool/net. i don't tend to keep restores but will do so for a bit, if only to try as another option if problem returns. since sfc failed apart from rebuild...

    hard soft crash

oops crashed again, will try older image of main xp. if that fails will reformat drive for data use. lessons learned(re) - keep more backups how much i tweaked xp over the years, not always for the better.

    hard soft crash

tried dell diagnostics cd, good for system info/drivers for a rebuild, as dell split os & drivers onto 2 cd. drives passed all dell tests. run sfc /scannow and so far so good .....

    hard soft crash

thanks for links. will try dell disk diagnostics, if only for old times sake. main xp is on newer drive, but drive is looking likely to be culprit. backup xp on original drive seems ok, so might build this xp into working system and then port to reformatted newer/new drive.

    hard soft crash

hi linney, thanks for links. loaded an image of my c drive, seemed ok, but upon first am boot crashed. will run on backup xp for long enough to confirm integrity of "2nd disk/hardware/os" then .... i had already run chkdsk on c which found errors .... crash or disk?. just remembered i use...

    hard soft crash

my dell 8400 started system crashing randomly but often (every few hours/15 mins up to 5 a day) with 8086 event error in logs. tried checking hardware seating, disabling startup software etc. switched from main xp setup to backup xp partition/drive via multiboot. this has not yet crashed so...

    toggle dpi/desktop/resolution

hi linney, thanks for reg refs, i do find that some ff pages don't display well, but my bigger problem is seeing dialogue/action boxes in some apps. i have made some progress for individual apps using the compatability trouble shooter. eg ccleaner/start menu 7. some apps behave oddly after...

    toggle dpi/desktop/resolution

hi v, thanks for links. my dell vostro 1500 has an intel express chip, with 1k by 800 max res. it would nice if i could switch dpi without logging off as that would be a working compromise. i may try some nircmd/utilities that allow immediate res changes. failing that i might trawl for better...

    toggle dpi/desktop/resolution

i use extended desktop on my w7 laptop/sony tv setup. i have set dpi to 200 so i can see text/content comfortably on tv from a distance. many programs do not display properly. sometimes i have to reset dpi and logoff to "safely use" such programs. in additions the desktop juggles/stacks icons...

    adding 2nd xp to xp/w7

update, installed 2nd xp to 2nd drive, xp install recognizes old xp (not w7) but allows selection of install partition. after xp install and reset of paragon boot mgr the choice is xp menu old & new or windows 7. forgot how slow xp install is and how awful dell driver setup is. makes w7 setup...

    adding 2nd xp to xp/w7

hi linney, thanks for links. will try a quick install of xp on a fresh partition on 2nd drive, to see if paragon partition boot mgr recognizes and allows me to switch easily. will advise progress if any.

    adding 2nd xp to xp/w7

drive 1 has xp + 3 data partitions, xp installation is my work horse pc and is over 4 years old, has tons of software (some i can't transfer), but just works. drive 2 has w7 + 2 data partitions. w7 is basic config. i use w7 (non activated) only for learning/backup to above xp. would like to...

    adding 2nd xp to xp/w7

currently running xp/w7 trial as a dual boot on 2 drive desktop. would like to adding a fresh xp and gradually add my many apps whilst still running very old xp and w7. if its too hard will remove w7 as pc is too slow (for me) for w7 and use paragon partition 10 boot mgr to access xp1/xp2.

    removing vista from dual boot

hi linney, w7 backup on my single drive dual v/w7 boot laptop, insists(greys out) on c(v) and 7(w7) partitions. might try removing some v dirs and then backing up again before vista removal. am about to try macrium and paragaon backup 10 both w7 and free. thanks for link re w7 backup file...

    removing vista from dual boot

hi bbb, i hope that easybcd will shortly become w7 aware or if the w7 repair disk won't enable a w7 boot then i would reinstall. thanks for links. macrium reflect has a free and a 30 day trial that might be worth trying. i could simply delete dirs from the vista partition and live with the...
