Does anyone know what a "half-length pci" is?

This could also be a CNR or communication network riser card. A CNR and AMR are not interchangable. For information on the CNR visit www.smlink.com. They manfacture a CNR that is compatable with most M/B except ASUS. The CNR card has the components mounted the same direction as a ISA card...

Printer "Hewlit Packard" - DeskJet 672C

Check your printer toolbox and make sure that the proper paper and print intensity is set. HP will allow for different print intensities depending upon the type of paper bining used. Sound like the printer is set to print on coated paper not plain paper.

    heatsink fan?

Was the computer powered on for several hours before the temp. was taken? I don't think 54 degrees in a problem for long term operation. I suggest a case fan in addition to your heat sink/fan if you are concerned. My K7 runs at 60 degrees all the time (it is nver powered off). Good luck

Unload Norton Utilities. I get more service call attributed to Norton Utilities than any other software/hardware. This may help in your situation.

    fusebox power supply

Very little you can do for a direct strike. I suggest a whole house surge supressor mounted in your electrical panel. Generally the cost about $50 and are made to fit most manf. panels. Qualified electrician is required. Best protection you can get.

Can't get ms-dos mode configured with enough memory.

win 98/se dynamically allocates memory. your game need real mode memory which win98 will not give you. find yourself a copy of dos 6.22 and boot from floppy to run your game.
