What OS? Sounds like you don't have crypt installed. The other error message may be OS-dependent.

If you're just recovering data it's often easier just to move the disk to a second Windows box as a secondary drive and then reboot; the OS will find the disk and when you log in as administrator you'll have full access to the disk. This won't work for RAID or striped volumes, of course.
Some systems have BIOSes that don't report memory correctly; there is an option (where, I don't remember) that will force the OS to use all memory. I'm pretty sure it's in the FreeBSD FAQ.
