CraigMan & linney,
ta for the heads up.
i've just spent the weekend reinstalling rules for kerio firewall.
A few more details in case rings a bell somewhere...
1. timing.
Shutting down.
( with a stopwatch)
took 28 secs after last clik to shutdown.
From Boot.
from power on took 50 secs to win...
Like MikeThorne I have a similar problem ie
at boot my Dell pc sits for what seems 3 mins,
& also at shutdown time seems to sit for a while.
I've been putting it down as spyware as a result
of holes or back doors (that i have opened )
in my firewall ( Kerio -2.1 etc ).
I'm preparing a...
ta ben & linney for the hands up.
sheila became impatient & put the box into
the local pc doctor. SO, i cant check anything at
the moment. Apparently she had had the problem for a little
while. It had also occurred when she tried installing a
new printer.
But i will have a look at the...
A friend, Sheila, had a usb port(s)
--- on motherboard or on a (pci?) card go cactus
- damaged sockets or whatever.
Sheila is visiting from NSW at the moment.
The (not so gory) details are not important <grin>.
She bought a Swann Usb 2.0 5 port PCI card
it came with a "driver and...
Hi linney
your suggestions in square brackets.
[XP uses the Read-only differently to previous operating systems when you are
looking at Folder Properties. Files are the same as before and can be
controlled via the Read-only check box.
Cannot Change the Read-Only Attribute of System Folders...

Hi Ed

hi edfair.
ta for reply.
i did use pcbackup years ago - i think it was part of
PCTOOLS - before win95. i assume commercial software -
grin - us poor old pensioners have to be selective with the
$s.
When writing apps for networks, we would usually include
a backup item - that would run...
...commands.
i lost it or deleted (robocopy gui) in my xp crash.
I did get one batch file to work ( this morning)
it ran on the [logical D drive]

Hi linney
I think
"Security and Access Permissions, of the .bat file, and any files which have actions performed on them, is another consideration" is one of the most likely.
"So is bad coding, but that is not my forte."
but same backup batch files have been working
sort of since ...95...
...tho i did defrag
all drives last weekend. i've found defrag stops if there is a problem with the file system.
& safe mode
the only other thing i can think of that might be affecting
normal *bat file operations is maybe m$ services [ that i might have fiddled with and set improperly].

Noreen came over yesterday (sunday).
i was able to d/l a trial version of 'backup now' &
eventually got to restore 3 of three CDs i created
AND showed her how to do the restore process.
She emailed later that her restore had worked.
It feels like about a ton of egg has been lifted from
my face...
Ta again to you both for your help.
Hi linney.
by a range ie meant a range of valid urls.
Sorry 'bout 999. masks would normally relate back to binary
and 255 = (2 ( to the power of 6)_ minus 1
ie the largest decimal number you can express in 6 bits.
My experience was with Honeywell-400 and...
Ta again blokes.
Finally got microsoft update to work.
After a lot of farting around trying to set ( ie restrict
svchost.exe access in Kerio Personal Firewall
(firstly) To a single x.x.x.x:y address - it didn't work
(2ndly) To a range of addresses - it didn't work either.
Eventually...

Hi linney,
ta for help.
***You can set Automatic Updates to Notify but not download anything until you say it's time to download. ***
That sounds a reasonable approach.
I think i disabled Automatic Updates amongst other things
to reduce # processes in startup / & in other general tuning...
