For those who might be interested, the reason I was getting this hourglass was a defective CDROM drive. The behaviour became worse and worse, and I changed out *everything*!! before it finally became clear the CDROM was the culprit.
Case closed.

Robyn
This works unless the control is in a frame - ActiveControl will return the name of the frame, but not the control in the frame. How can I return the name of the control in that case?
Cheers,

What I find curious, tho, is that in Outlook Express all HTML email displays properly - from the same server. Leads me to think the problem might be with Outlook97 - especially since Outlook2000 (part of Office 2000) also displays HTML properly. All from the same ISP....
Hi Paul666,
Thanks for your reply. I think I phrased my question poorly.
I was able to *send* email with stationery - *viewing* incoming email that is formatted as html is another matter. When I get email in HTML format, I see the text in plain format, and icons representing the html and...
...reality has since shuddered it's way home in the form of a fair-dinkum network guru who cleared a lot of this stuff up for me. Funny, never found *any* of what he told me anywhere on the web. He recommended that I use the mailboxes that my web host provides, thus having the 'Post Office'...
In reading some of the other posts, I found a recommendation to issue a ipconfig at the command prompt. This revealed that the number I mentioned about is indeed the IP address of my ISP - it also revealed that there was a valid DNS suffix. My gateway computer does not have DHCP enabled, neither...
In the IIS Manager -> Default SMTP server -> Properties dialog, on the 'General' tab, the recommended settings for IP address is (from the combobox) "All Unassigned" - the appropriate setting, I was told. In that combobox are two other possibilities, my PC's IP address: '192.168.0.1'...
Hi,
Here's the background: I am somewhat of a novice at networking. We have a small home LAN, peer-to-peer, with most systems running Windows98se. We have a broadband connection using cable. We were using Allegrosurf proxy server to do ICS, but it had no mail handling capabilities to speak of -...
Yep, done that. I'm actually on the Asus site now - it seems others have had the same problem with this particular motherboard. Perhaps the techie there might be able to shed some light...
TCP has file sharing set to RW, and a drive is shared on both systems. Do I need NetBeui? I understand it's...
Hi,
Thanks to all who replied. File and print sharing were enabled (failed to mention that, didn't I?).
I just hooked two systems together using a cross-over cable (thinking the hub might be bad), but while the older system can access the new system (Asus A7N266-VM with AMD Duron 1300 and...
...appropriate drivers are loaded and 'working properly', the PC cannot see itself nor can it see other PCs on the LAN. Interestingly, others can see *it* and access the shared drive.
I'm trying to determine whether this is a configuration or hardware issue... all systems have the standard home...
I've just loaded Win98se on an AMD 1300 / ASUS mb with onboard NIC. Installed the driver from the accompanying CD, and according to device manager, the NIC is working fine. Running TCP protocol only (no other protocols), properties of which are the usual:

Hi MaineGeek,
Thanks for your reply. Not to be contrary, but I have ZoneAlarm running on a a Pentium 350 / 128meg RAM system at home (acts as a internet gateway for the home network) also running Allegrosurf Proxy Server and WorkgroupMail Mail server - it doesn't seem to have these performance...
Hi - I have a Pentium 650 with 120meg of RAM. It seems to be busy with some as-yet undisclosed activity - every 3 seconds the mouse cursor turns into an hourglass. When I look in the task manager (I think that's what it's called - Ctrl-Alt-Del brings it up) I see the following - read from bottom...
Hi,
I hope I'm in the right forum... purchased AllegroSurf Voyager - Network and installed it on a 6 user network.
I wish to have my mail go only to my computer (which acts as the 'server') and my wife's mail go only to hers. I'm sure there must be a way to do this.
Our internet provider is...
Hi,
I have an Excel spreadsheet that I've kludged into a database - Excel is the only tool available to me at the moment where I work. For data entry I use a form with text controls. The control source for these controls is not set to anything. Data entered into these controls is saved to a row...
