I don't belive this is a hacking question which I know are not allowed on this site. If it is sorry.

Have a client that some how family members got the computer to join a domain. I know the passwords but cannot log on as the local admin account looks for the domain and its not available. Is there a way to change to reg to remove domain so the local admin account can log on?

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.

Can you log on to the local computer? When you are at the login box there should be a drop down box, under where you enter the password, to either login in to the domain or local computer.

The computer has the welcome screen enabled so there is no option to change to local computer.

Are you sure the computer is joined to a domain? When a computer is part of a domain the Welcome Screen is supposed to be disabled. Anyways, when you are at the Welcome Screen hit "Ctrl+Alt+Del" twice to bring up the logon box.

Life is a big Roleplaying adventure.

In booth reg boot and safe mode hitting "Ctrl+Alt+Del" does bring up the logon box, however when click on options I do not get anything other then username and password. I don't know the computer name so I cannot try the pcname\user logon.

The error message I get is.
The system cannot log you on now because the domain XXXXX is not available

You have to install the program I cannot access the PC.

By your descriptions, your computer is not joined to a domain. So, you do not need to log on using pcname\user logon... just use the user name and password.

If the passwords don't work, and you're sure the username is correct, then someone may have changed it, and you may have an uphill battle trying to get back in.

The computer is thinking its part of a domain as in my quote above.

The password works as I used the EBD and cleared all passwords.

Ended up removing the HD, using another computer to take control of the NTFS file permissions, backed up all data files and then rebuilt the computer.

Something is not right here. When you start up in safe mode with no networking you must log in as a local user and that local profile must exist on the machine. You don't have to choose whether to use a domain or not because there is no domain, only local. So if you knew the admin password you would have logged in as Administrator using that password, otherwise you had the wrong password.

David.
