audio driver-windows update

windows update has a driver update for Soundmax digital audio, it downloads but will not install. I have updated every update but this one, it refuses to install. The message is driver failed to install to try again. Any idea?
thanks for any help. Using Xp Home on an HP Pavilion 750n

Driver updates from Windows Update have sometimes turned out to be less than reliable in the past. It often is a better policy to use the manufacturer's site to update any drivers. Or in your case try HP before Windows.
