Alternative to Citrix?

We're running a database application that is very slow across the WAN, so for the slowest remote offices we have setup a Citrix server.

I'm looking for alternatives to Citrix (and terminal services). Any other software packages that will let users log in with their own sessions?

What about application forwarding? Are there any software packages that will act as a transparent front-end, so the our database application will connect to that which will then connect to our database server? Some kind of process synchronization?
 
Doubt you'll find anything that uses less bandwidth than terminal services...

We came close to buying something like these:
but in the end as it was our software in question we re-wrote it to a 3-tier architecture instead. The hardware boxes are expensive to.
