Your drive is standing on its last leg. Any data that you value, get a backup of it asap. Your drive could last a few more months, or a few more minutes.
I agree with teknoguy totally on this one. Just a note, the contents of a HD do not affect the Bios ability to detect it. It could care less what was on it. You may even want to check for the latest bios version for your computer on the compaq site...
Go into your device manager and see if you can change the irq of your NIC to interupt 10, this is fairly standard for most NIC's anyways. You may have to reserve an interupt, remove the nic and reinstall it. If not, maybe try and see if another NIC will default to irq 10 or let you switch it...

Just use the policies from poledit alone on the machine, make sure you tell it to manually update policies from c:\windows\config.pol, make sure you save the policy in that directory also. Are you fairly familiar with poledit, or do you need more information?

Did you load the proper drivers for the DVD-Rom? maybe ME just detected it as a CDrom and loaded generic CDrom drivers for it, I would remove the device from the Device manager and restart windows, when it comes back up it will autodetect and try to install the right drivers again, just point...
