Thanks for the info. I assumed that's what I'd have to do.
Actually, the box is only a year old. We elected to keep the old software when we got it so we could keep the expenses down.

We currently have a server running Windows Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000. Our desired outcome is Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005. Is there a logical progression to get there, or should I just do a clean install with everything and use a backup copy of the db to setup the new SQL?

I know, I know, you should only have one DHCP server running at a time. Regardless, I have two and that is part of my problem.
The router was originally set as DHCP server, but now I'm trying to migrate the DHCP to the domain server and I'm running into problems. The router and server have...
Technome,
Disabling SMB signing did the trick. It's been a day and a half since I disabled it in group policies and no lockups since.
Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated.

Technome,
That sounds interesting. If I disable SMB signing, will I still be able to share folders and files? I found a little about it in the help file, but I'm not all that clear.
How do I go about disabling SMB? Is it global setting, or per file?
Thanks for the info.
To clarify, we bought and paid for two copies of Server 2008 through CDW. They, in turn, authorized us to go to the MS download site to download the software. Evidently they don't sent it out boxed these days. Via that site, we were authorized to download Server 2008 or...
A little background first:
We had (emphasis on had) a LAN with a domain server running Windows NT-4 Server and a SQL server running Windows Server 2000 and SQL server 2000.
The domain server rolled over and died. It went belly up with it's little legs kicking a couple of times in the air, then...
I've gotten away from my orginal problem, but some of the suggestions have brought up another problem or question, so I'll take a chance and continue rather than start a new thread.
Here's the current setup and problem. My router and domain server are both DHCP servers. I want to migrate to...
Another day and the problems continue, but possibly another piece of the puzzel.
Yesterday, I stopped the DHCP server service so the router was the only thing trying to issue IP addresses.
Part way through the day, the same problem occured, the shared files all locked up when someone tried to...
So far, so good with the current setup. At least the villagers have put down the torches and quit ratteling chains.
Yes to AD.
Yes, all clients are on the domain.
DNS integrated into AD: How would I check that?
Clients are set to aquire addresses via DHCP, but DNS settings are "hardwired"...
Exactly the procedures I tried this morning. I have about 30 clients to work with. I'd taken exactly those same steps prior to the workforce arriving this morning on 13 clients when I found they couldn't reach the internet. I reversed my actions at that point to go back to the drawing board...
Thanks again, jbeaudette. I was out of the office on Thursday, and there seemed to be no problem. This morning (Monday) it reared it's ugly head again with a different file. I trued stopping the services as indicated in your last post, but it wouldn't shut down. I had to resort to the reboot...
Jbeaudette,
Thanks for the info. I'm learning as I go along. The suggestion you made didn't open to any files, only folders. Probably to be expected as most users have shut down and gone home now. The ones left are pretty much locked out of any shares due to this problem.
I'm looking under...
