Thanks very much. That solves the major issue that was bothering me. If what you suggest is the case, and I suspect it is, then he can either use 'forgot password' to put something easier in its place, or 'disconnect' it as described in the articles referenced above. The last question...
Thanks all, again, for your help.
strongm: Yes, I guess it could be a PIN
spanjim: I believe this is a standard account. If he set the machine up himself, he wouldn't know about system admin accounts and if someone set it up for him, I don't think they would set him up as an admin. At least I...
Thank you both for your replies.
spanjim: "How? By creating a new user profile in Windows, setting aside all other stored logins?"
No, by opening his user profile preferences and 'unchecking' the box which, if checked, requires a user to login
spamjim: "Where does that icon/shortcut lead? To a...
Hello,
I apologize in advance if this is too 'wordy'.
I'm trying to help an elderly neighbor who has an 8.1 PC. It has a 4 digit password which he wanted to eliminate so he could just turn the PC on and do what he wanted, so I told him how to eliminate the login, which he did. He didn't know...
Thanks for your suggestions and my apologies for the delay in responding. I had a family member in the hospital and had to let everything else slide.
As it turns out, SYSTEM did have full control, but I added 'Everyone' and was able to create the new directories and copy the 'Default' profile...
Thank you for your reply.
I did as you suggested and reset the permissions on this folder, i.e. I gave Administrators and users Full Control. I then created another account, a standard account, with UAC still off, and restarted the machine. The new account appeared on the login page but an...
I recently purchased a used Vista Home Premium Laptop which runs fine but I have a problem creating user accounts. There is one account on the machine which is called 'Admin' and is an administrator account. In Explorer the account shows as 'user'.( C:\Users\user) and in the Registry there is...
Thanks VERY MUCH to wolluf, goombawaho, Martin, paparazi, and all the others who give their time and talent and contribute here to help others. All the suggestions are greatly appreciated. I expected hardware driver issues, especially since the new motherboard is generations beyond where the...
Thanks very much Vacunita and kmcferrin.
I will do the Win 2K re-install. The main thing at this point is to get the new box running with the old drive and all programs and data intact.
Thanks again, Tom
kmcferrin,
Thanks for the good thoughts. Yes, I had thought about removing all the other drivers before I shut down, in fact I did remove the Intel video. I didn't anticipate the controller issue, though. I planned to do a Safe Mode start if I ran into problems with video, network, USB, etc...
Vacunita...
Thanks for the quick reply. I take it that you feel that the issue IS the new drive controller, at least at this point. I assume that the Win 2000 CD will have a native controller driver which will work with the controller chip on the new motherboard. I'll give it a try.
Thanks...
I'm doing a new build using the HDD, floppy, and CD from an old HP Pavilion 8660C. Originally the old PC shipped with Win 98 SE but was upgraded to Win 2000 several years ago. The OS upgrade left the machine with the ability to dual boot Win 2000 and DOS (Win 98). Before the last shutdown I...
HP Pavilion zv5000, Win XP Home, Sp.2. Machine was running perfectly, however on a recent boot-up it defaulted to the boot menu. The message was that the machine hadn't shut down properly last time, although it seemed normal at the time. I chose L.K.G. and the machine booted fine. It hasn't...
Thanks to all who replied.
After considerable digging, I found the offending file. There was a .dll in QuickBooks called 'Qbconv32.dll' which was causing setup to hang. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/252725/en-us
After renaming the file, setup proceeded normally.
Here's the 'Home...
